Emily Borenstein was born in 1923 in Elizabeth, N.J. and moved to Middletown when she was three years old.
She married Morris Borenstein whom she met at Juilliard when she was a student there studying piano and theory.
Her husband to-be enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Emily dropped out of school to marry him in 1942 in Montgomery,
Alabama where he was training on a B-17 in World War Two and later flew 50 combat missions in Europe. They had three
children by the time Emily was 26 years old. She graduated from
Orange County Community College (Suny-Orange) with an Associate of Applied Science degree
in General Studies. Her B.S. degree is in Comparative Literature with a minor in
Psychology (Columbia University).
Her graduate degrees are in English (New York University) and in Clinical Social Work (Columbia University).
She was also in private practice as a psychotherapist until 2006. Emily's poetry has appeared in poetry magazines
in this country and abroad.
Emily was appointed Music/Drama/Dance Reviewer for the Middletown Times Herald-Record; was Supervisor of
Volunteer Services and was Poetry Advisor to the Orange County Arts Council; taught piano and was the recipient of
the Jewish Currents 1978 Poetry Award. She worked with psychiatric patients as a Clinical Social Worker, was
Supervisor for Quality Control for the Social Work Department at Middletown Psychiatric Center and was appointed the first Family
Support Coordinator to work with the families of psychotic patients. Emily was presented with an award as Mental Health Professional of the Year for Orange and Sullivan Counties in New York State, May 16, 1991. She was also in private
practice in Psychotherapy until the end of 2006 at which time she
decided to devote herself completely to her writing. |
